Dave McNabb has been a senior companion volunteer for less than a year, but already the program has made an impact on him. Dave spends his time working with a client who suffers from dementia, and they spend much of their time at the Weidman Senior Center. Dave said this experience has been a fun one. “It’s a lot of fun to hang around with everyone at the center,” McNabb said. “It’s great for him, and it’s good for me as well.” McNabb is with his companion five days a week. Every morning he picks him up from his home and drives him to the senior center. They eat a meal, sometimes play games, and talk with the other people there. Dave said that although his companion is dealing with the symptoms of dementia, he still manages to make light of the situation. “ “He laughs at himself a lot, and he’s never short of patience,” Dave said. “He’s got a great disposition.” Dave said that volunteering has been a simple, yet rewarding experience. “There’s nothing too complicated about it. It’s real easy to be around everyone, and everyone gets along real well.”
