Staying Young

Johnnie Richardson

Foster Grandparents - Isabella County, Mt. Pleasant

Johnnie Richardson has been a foster grandparent for almost 17 years. Despite being 91 years of age, Richardson says the volunteer program is what keeps her going most days. “It helps to be with teenagers,” Johnnie said. “It keeps me thinking young being around younger people.” Johnnie said she really enjoys seeing the children she works with make progress. “I work with some kids who are in special education, and it’s really good to see them make progress after you’ve worked with them.” Johnnie said she thought about retiring a few years ago after she had surgery, but the thought of leaving the kids was too much. “I thought about retiring but thinking about the classroom almost brought me to tears,” Richardson said. “The program has given my life more meaning and is a part of why I’m still here.”
